Classic Horror

The Curse of The Cat People (1944)

Premieres October 18 at 9pm ET on HS70
Available on demand in October

If gore and jump scares aren’t your thing you might like this unusual horror sequel from director Robert Wise. The supernatural tale of a girl befriending a ghost and catching the eye of some evil interlopers is more akin to spooky dramas like Rebecca or the films of Guillermo Del Toro than Friday the 13th, and you don’t need to have seen Cat People to enjoy it.

Bizarre Horror

Prom Night II: Hello Mary Lou (1986)

Premieres October 3 at 10:40pm ET on HS80
Available on demand in October

This film has NOTHING to do with the original Prom Night, instead re-launching the franchise as a fun play on possession and Nightmare on Elm Street-esque surreality in this tale of a woman done wrong back for supernatural revenge. This film got run into the ground on cable replays and often misunderstood for its links to the slasher original, but Bruce Pittman’s wild visuals and sick sense of humour make this a Canadian 80s horror classic.

Action Horror

Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter (1974)

Premieres October 24 at 9pm ET on HS70
Available on demand in October

Imagine Akira Kurosawa and Jacques Demy teamed up to tell the story of a vampire hunter and you’ll get the vibe of this unique attempt from Hammer Horror to start its own franchise character. Captain Kronos is a wandering warrior on the hunt for a creature draining the age and beauty from young women while also seducing some on his way and delivering justice at the end of his sword.

Heady Horror

The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2006)

Premieres October 20 at 9pm ET on HS80
Available on demand in October

Laura Linney takes the lead in this film about a lawyer defending a priest (Tom Wilkinson) who’s accused of killing a young woman during an exorcism. This legal thriller and possession story was considered a bit of an oddity in its time but the unusual genre mix and growing genre filmography of its director Scott Derrickson have made the film an important part of the 00s horror canon.

Slimy Horror

Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (1995)

Premieres October 4 at 9pm ET on HS90
Available on demand in October

You’d be forgiven if you slept on this wild, gory horror siege film because from the outside it sounds like cheap exploitation of a TV show, but Demon Knight is truly a delightful gem of 90s horror filmmaking. Cinematographer-turned-director Ernest Dickerson uses a thrilling neon palate to bring slimy, violent demons to life and also wrings fun performances from folks like Jada Pinkett Smith, CCH Pounder, William Sadler and an absolutely unforgettably delightful villain turn from Billy Zane.
