Women on the Run: Thelma and Louise and A Rage in Harlem

September 24, 2021 By Alison Cosgrove Go Back

Reelworld Screen Institute staff members Safia Abdigir, Hannah Yohannes, Alison Cosgrove and Pahull Bains take over Hollywood Suite’s four channels Sept 29 and 30 showcasing some of their favourite films from the 70s through to today.

The 90s was a period of youth rebellion that blended with art and culture, it was a period where film changed the perception of the female gender role. In the iconic films Thelma and Louise (Ridley Scott) and A Rage In Harlem (Bill Duke) we witness the bad-assery of women and we root for their success on their misguided paths.

Thelma and Louise

Dubbed one of the top movies of the 90s that promoted feminism, this story of two friends fleeing from domestic abuse is the pinnacle of female empowerment. We follow and cheer for the girls who take to the open road on a crime spree in search of freedom. This is an arduous journey that celebrates the spirit and strength of women’s friendships.

A Rage In Harlem

A period piece that transports us to the dark side of Harlem, we are entangled in a love story of a woman who struggles between her poor-valued criminal habits that rely on seduction and self-preservation and letting down her guard to the innocence of an endearing man charmed by her beauty. Immabelle (Robin Givens) takes off from Mississippi with a truck full of other ex-boyfriends gold to hide away in Harlem, where she meets Jackson (Forest Whitaker). With gangsters and henchmen after the gold, the unlikely pair use their wits to evade demise.
