This December on Hollywood Suite

Dr. Seuss's The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T

5,000 Fingers of Dr. T (1953)

This under-appreciated gem is the only film written by Dr. Seuss and tells the surreal tale of a boy dreaming of a despotic piano instructor and his army of child players. While the music and comedy is reason enough to tune in, the real joy of this film comes from how it realizes of some of Seuss’s wild illustration styles in a fantasy world that’s totally unique.

Follow That Bird

Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird (1985)

It’s hard to imagine that Sesame Street ever peaked in popularity, but this unusual road movie is proof that this late-60s creation was firmly in the culture of the 1980s. This movie sees Big Bird fleeing the nest and all the muppets and humans of Sesame Street heading out on a wild and emotional trip to bring him back. If you want to hear more about the movie check out our episode about it it on the A Year In Film Podcast.

Casper

Casper (1995)

Christina Ricci made so many significant family films in the 90s it’s not surprising that even a hit like Casper got a little lost to time. The story tells of a father (Bill Pullman) and daughter who find their house is haunted by a very friendly ghost, BUT things go quite unexpected places once the nefarious Eric Idle and Cathy Moriarty appear to cause trouble in two very funny turns.

Premieres Dec 26 at 9:00pm ET on HS90

Race The Sun

Race the Sun (1996)

If you want a ‘feel good’ movie this true story based on a class of Hawaiian teens who created a solar car to compete in Australia might hit the spot. Halle Berry leads a diverse cast of teen misfits out to prove they can finish what they start.

Premieres Dec 5 at 9:00pm ET on HS90

Kung Fu Hustle

Kung Fu Hustle: Director’s Cut (2004)

If your family is a little older and open to some subtitles, they are likely to be delighted by Stephen Chow’s kinetic and comedic take on the gangster movie. Think Looney Tunes or anime brought to real life and you’ll still be surprised and the wild and unusual places Chow takes the story of a hapless hustler forced to help defend a slum from violent gangsters.
