Deep Cuts: Lesser-known flicks to please anyone
December 13, 2024 By Go BackThe holidays are upon us and whether you are looking to choose a movie that will please a range of family members, or having a relaxing night to yourself, we wanted to offer a selection of deeper cut films that can please a variety of tastes!
Something Stylish | How to Steal A Million (1966)
Audrey Hepburn and Peter O’Toole have careers so full of classic films it’s not surprising that there are gems in their filmography that don’t get the attention they deserve like this chic heist comedy. Both actors delight in this frothy film detailing a backward-thinking art heist in Paris that shows off the city as well as Hepburn’s amazing Givenchy costumes. It has a mix of laughter, thrills and romance that will charm the grinchiest this holiday season.
Something Family Friendly | Cloak and Dagger (1984)
While we have a lot of kid’s classics on offer during the holidays, if you want one they may NOT have seen, this spy movie reflects the 1980s best tendencies to push young adult entertainment to exciting new places. The film follows Davey (E.T.’s Henry Thomas), an imaginative kid who is thrust into real life spy intrigue and has to rely on his imaginary friend Superspy Jack Flack (9 to 5’s Dabney Coleman) to get out of it. Perfect for kids curious about more adult action movies.
Something Romantic | Ali & Ava (2021)
This romantic charmer from the UK got lost a bit in the COVID streaming only era but is easily one of the most heartfelt looks at the realistic complications of modern romance in the past decade. Fans of British TV will immediately recognize Adeel Akhtar and Claire Rushbrook who play two genuinely warm people drawn to each other in spite of their complications with family and past relationships. A perfect movie if you’re looking for hopeful, realistic romance this holiday.
Something Funny | Dick (1999)
It can be best to avoid politics during the holidays but this oft overlooked 90s teen comedy makes fair game of Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal in ways that’ll get anyone laughing. Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams play two less-than-bright teen girls who nonetheless find themselves embedded in the White House blowing the Watergate conspiracy wide open in this hilarious twist on All The President’s Men. A star-studded cast of comedy icons like Will Ferrell, Dave Foley, Teri Garr, and Ryan Reynolds guarantee chuckles on a winter evening.
Something Explosive | Source Code (2011)
For the action-oriented, this Jake Gyllenhaal-lead sci fi action movie was slept on a decade ago but easily earns its reputation as a unique and unusual thrill-ride. Gyllenhaal stars as a clandestine operative tasked to go back in time to the scene of a terrorist attack to understand what happened and whodunnit in a short window of time, looped endlessly for his if he fails. Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright and Michelle Monaghan round out the cast of this truly unique take on a spy thriller.
