TORONTO (May 13, 2020) – The Hollywood Suite original documentary, RAISING THE DEAD: RE-EXAMINING NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is an homage to George A. Romero’s 60s horror classic, Night of the Living Dead. The doc makes its world broadcast premiere on Hollywood Suite on May 29th at 9:00 pm ET on Hollywood Suite 70s Movies, immediately followed by Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968) at 9:40 pm ET and Dawn of the Dead (1978) at 11:20 pm ET. The documentary is also available, in colour and in a special black-and-white “Monochrome Edition,” On Demand, on the Hollywood Suite GO app and on HSGO.ca.
Night of the Living Dead, widely thought of as the “mother” of all Zombie apocalypse films, introduced archetypes for the horror genre that still stand today. The 1968 black-and-white classic with subversive political undertones chronicles one small-town’s residents fighting for survival from flesh-eating ghouls when the dead suddenly return to life. It spurred a franchise of five additional films, has been remade several times, and inspired countless horror films.
With a tiny budget and a cast of unknown actors, nobody could have predicted Night of the Living Dead would revolutionize the entire genre of horror movies. Featuring new interviews with original cast and crew, archival footage, and commentary from a diverse slate of film experts, Raising the Dead: Re-examining Night of the Living Dead takes you back to 1968 to see how an unlikely movie rewrote the rules of filmmaking and held a mirror to a society in turmoil.
George A. Romero’s film has become the standard for horror films to follow,” said David Kines, President Hollywood Suite. “We are excited to present this documentary as a companion piece to the 1968 masterwork.”
“I wanted to dive into the film that set the template for the zombie genre and discover what gives this low-budget film such a cult-following and staying power,” said Ryan Mains, Director and Producer, Raising the Dead: Re-examining Night of the Living Dead. “Bringing together the crew’s behind-the-scenes stories and modern film authorities’ analysis, has expanded my respect and admiration for the film and its filmmaker.”
