Film Facts: Independence Day

School’s IN for summer! From Canada Day to Labour Day, Hollywood Suite is offering Summer Film School, a crash course in 40 of the most iconic films of the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s.

Did you know Roland Emmerich's Independence Day (1996) required a then record-breaking 3000 special effects shots? Computer generated effects were still in their infancy, so most of the special effects were done in-camera to save money and to look more realistic. A 10x5 foot model of the White House was built for forced perspective shots and then blown up for the alien destruction scene in a shot that took a week to plan and required 40 explosive charges.
